OUR ROOMS
BABY ROOM
Our professional and nurturing staff team will care for your baby's needs by creating a stimulating, curious and exciting environment. We focus on a ‘Key Person’ approach in the baby room, ensuring that your child builds strong and consistent relationships with the staff. The key person will meet your individual child’s needs; this will include settling your child, changing nappies, providing support at lunchtime, and being the primary contact for parents during drop-off and pick-up times. The planning within the room focuses on being utterly responsive to the children’s learning and their individual development. This is in line with National Guidance – Pre Birth to Three and Building the Ambition. Our online system, Learning Journals, tracks children’s ongoing learning and development. TOTS
The Tots room is for our children aged 2 to 3. This room promotes enquiry, curiosity, and invitations to learning. In this age group, children are becoming more involved in learning by doing things themselves and learning through their actions and schematic play. Schemas are patterns of repeated play that our practitioner will extend and develop to further their individual learning experiences. The planning for Tots is also fully responsive to the children’s learning, and the room uses a ‘Key Person’ approach.

EARLY LEARNING AND CHILDCARE (ELC)
Our ELC room is an area of the nursery for children aged 3 to 5 (before starting school) years old. This area is where children are becoming more independent and sociable. They need and desire to be mentally and physically active as they grow and develop. In the ELC, we will give the children the choice, balance, breadth, and depth of experiences to allow them to flourish. The children have direct access to free flow indoors and outdoors.
The children’s learning is led by their natural curiosity. Staff will extend, expand, and develop their learning using the Curriculum for Excellence and Building Ambition. We also enjoy being part of our wider community, having links with our local care home, shopping centre, and library, and we can access local amenities like the woods and park.
COMMON CHILDHOOD ILLNESSES
FOOD
A healthy diet is encouraged, whether it is a snack or nursery meal and good eating habits are encouraged. Our snack and lunch menu is used in line with the Scottish Government Document ‘Setting the Table’ and the Eat Well plate. Environmental Health Regulations pertinent to the preparation of foodstuffs are strictly followed. A B C Private Nursery is inspected every year, and the certificate is displayed within the setting.
Parents should inform the nursery at the time of registration of any forbidden foods or special dietary arrangements for their child. Staff will go through this at the initial settling period, and a care plan will be set up.
A typical daily menu is as follows: -
-
Breakfast – Cereal – Shreddies, Rice Krispies, Weetabix
-
Lunch – 2 Courses – Chicken Curry and Yoghurt/Fruit
-
Snack – Fresh Fruit and Savoury Snack
(This is only a sample of the snacks we serve.)

IMPORTANCE OF PLAY
‘Play At This Time Is Not Trivial; It Is Highly Serious And Of Deep Significance’
(Froebel, 1826)
Play is the way our children learn, develop and flourish. Through play, a child develops their cognitive, social, emotional and physical capacities. At A B C Private Nursery, we know and understand the importance of play for the children in our care. We recognise that every child is unique and that they need to be given the time to play to answer their own questions, learn new skills, and work alongside other children and adults.

OUTDOOR PLAY AREAS
At A B C Private Nursery, we are passionate about providing children with a rural experience in an urban setting. Our garden, divided into four distinct areas, offers a wealth of learning and play opportunities. The Astroturf area caters to babies, with direct access from their room and a selection of outdoor toys and large equipment. Tots and ELC enjoy a vast space for physical, problem-solving, literacy, and numeracy activities, featuring a large log cabin that blends indoor and outdoor play. Our out-of-school club has access to a climbing frame, outdoor cabin, playgrounds, trampoline, and nature area. We take pride in our unique allotment and animal and planting garden. Here, children can participate in growing seasonal produce and caring for rescue animals like ducks, silkie chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs, integrating nutrition and animal care into their daily experiences.
EXCITING TRIPS AND OUTINGS
Trips for children are organised with prior parental consent and full staff supervision. Each outing is preceded by a comprehensive risk assessment to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
INCLUSIVE CULTURAL ENVIRONMENT
A B C Private Nursery staff are committed to maintaining high expectations for all children and ensuring a discrimination-free environment. We promote equal opportunities, encourage children and staff to understand and accept cultural differences and equip staff with the skills to integrate and support diverse needs effectively.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES
All children are individuals and will be treated as such. Children and staff are to be kept aware of cultural differences. The children are encouraged to accept those differences as a norm, and staff are armed with the skills of child integration regardless of the kind of differences that are encountered.
